Why Carnelian
Carnelian is a translucent variety of chalcedony, a member of the quartz family, with a color range that runs from pale amber to deep blood orange depending on the iron oxide content of each individual stone. No two beads are identical. The variation across a single bracelet is entirely natural.
Used in jewelry since ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Rome, carnelian has appeared in royal seals, signet rings, and burial objects across thousands of years of recorded history. Napoleon Bonaparte wore a carnelian seal ring he found during his Egyptian campaign and considered it one of his most prized possessions. The stone has been a fixture in serious jewelry collections for millennia.
In The Terracotta, carnelian's translucency allows light to pass through the round beads, creating depth and warmth from within. The heishi-cut tubes show the stone's natural banding and color variation in a completely different register. The twisted barrel focal stone is the same material, cut to reveal a faceted surface that catches light from every angle.

Why Gold-Filled, Not Plated
The accent beads throughout The Terracotta are 14k gold-filled, not plated.
Gold-filled contains 100 times more gold than standard plating. The gold layer is mechanically bonded to the base metal, which means it will not flake, fade, or turn. It holds its warmth for decades, not seasons.
The warm gold tone was chosen to mirror the amber end of carnelian's color range, creating a seamless transition between stone and metal. Against the deeper blood orange beads, the gold reads as a deliberate contrast. Against the paler amber beads, it reads as a continuation. Either way, it works.
