Why Fire Opal

Fire opal is a variety of common opal distinguished by its vivid body color: orange, red, and yellow tones produced by trace amounts of iron oxide within the silica structure. Unlike precious opal, fire opal is valued for the intensity and saturation of its body color, not play-of-color.

The finest fire opal in the world comes from the Mexican states of Querétaro, Hidalgo, and Jalisco. Mexican fire opal has been prized since the time of the Aztecs, who called it quetzalitzlipyollitli, the stone of the bird of paradise. It was considered among the most precious of all stones in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica.

The faceted rondelle cut used in the Fuego is the correct choice for this material. Faceting maximizes the transparency and internal refraction of the stone, allowing the color to glow from within rather than sit on the surface. The result is a strand that appears lit. Gold-filled contains 100 times more gold than standard gold plating. The gold layer is mechanically bonded to the base metal under heat and pressure, not electroplated. It will not flake, fade, or turn.
